As you probably know by now, the Little Marvels haiku anthology which Poetry Pea Press publishes will be all about belonging and alienation this year. Do you want to be in it? Well no guarantees of course, but as long as you are on the mailing list you will receive an invitation, if not I’m afraid you’ll definitely not have your haiku in what is becoming a leading poetry press publication. You have time to make sure that your name is on the mailing list… sign up.

Today I’m talking to the Israeli Poet Roman Lyakhovetsky. Even good friends have trouble with surnames as you are about to hear.

Poetry Pea is not a political operation, as you know I do my best to avoid the political. Politics in poetry has its place, but not here. However, when I heard the news about October 7th my first thoughts were with Roman, hoping that he was not caught up in it. As you’ll hear I was left worrying for a little while.

When we were able to catch up I had a chat with him about belonging and alienation and as a result I asked him if he wouldn’t mind coming onto the podcast to chat with me and inspire you with his work. So here he is.

My sincere thanks to Roman for coming along, reading us his poetry and giving us an insight into his life in Israel, how it was to arrive there as a teenager and to grow into his country. I hope like me you enjoyed the poetry and learnt a little something.

Thank you for coming along and listening. Your mission now should you care to accept it is to:

  • Make sure you are on the mailing list and therefore will receive an invitation to submit to the next Little Marvels anthology
  • Make sure you have submitted to what ever we are reading at the moment, if you are listening to this when it’s published you have until the 15th April 2025 to get your death awareness haiku and tanka over to us and of course you absolutely must submit to the Poetry Pea video prompt on YouTube. If you are late to the party, check the drop down menu at submissions on the website
  • Please consider becoming a member of Poetry Pea to support the work we do here, purchase one of our publications or maybe buy us a coffee. I can’t continue without your help.
