What we will be looking for in your submission:

What I’m looking for is someone who has definitely looked at Kerouac’s work. Tried to follow

  • his spontaneity
  • his themes
  • his punctuation / style

Has read their poems aloud to make sure they have a sound and rhythm

Jack wrote about themes:  

  • his travels
  • religion
  • compassion
  • mercy
  • love
  • the state of nothingness “mu
  • nature in combination with humanity
  • philosophical thoughts on the human condition
  • impermanence 

Other pointers:

  • no 5-7-5 haiku
  • simple language
  • listen to the sound of each word, each syllable
  • think about your reader
    • how will they interpret the words
    • how will they interpret the sound
    • how will they react eg. sway/tap their feet
