Welcome to this the 20th episode of the fourth series. I am constantly amazed that in four years I’ve gone from chatting to myself about haiku and now you have joined me and a wonderful, kind and caring community of poets is emerging. Thank you.

This year we’ve been concentrating on techniques and I thought it would be interesting to have an open call this month and see if I can spot the various techniques in your submissions.  I wonder do you think the work we’ve been doing together this year has made a difference to the quality of your haiku? I’ll be interested to know what  you think.

I’m joined this time by three community judges, Ronald K Craig, Lorraine Padden and Diane Garcia. My sincere thanks to them for reading through the two hundred or so submissions that were chosen for the Journal, picking out their favourites and  writing a commentary which you can read again in the next journal.

Speaking of which if you have bought the Summer Journal do you think you could go an write a review and let me and others know what you think of it? I’d be very grateful.

Here is a PDF with all the poems I’m reading today. Click on the link…

Your mission if you chose to do it:

  • Email your haibun: deadline is the 31st of October 2021
  • Email your long haiku 16-20 syllables by the 20th October
  • Sign up for the mailing if you haven’t already done so
  • Subscribe to the Poetry Pea YouTube channel

Do listen to the podcast as well as read the PDF as you’ll find bonus content on there.

Once again thanks to my editors, James, Robert and Craig, to Dianne, Lorraine and Ronald for being my community judges. Please volunteer for this role, it’s such a vital service to the community. Your community needs you.

A massive round of applause to all of you who had poems chosen for the podcast today and to those of you who didn’t, please submit again.

Last but not least thank you for coming along and listening, because it is so nice to know that you are out there and we are journeying along the haiku road together.

Til next time… Keep writing

Now, if I’ve messed up, which is quite possible, I am human… don’t tell my kids… do please email me and I’ll sort out my errors.
